BRECHT IN CHINA
This blog is a chronicle of my staging of scenes from The Caucasian Chalk Circle. (German: Der kaukasische Kreidekreis). The scenes are being staged in Hong Kong, and reflect a history of Chinese engagement with the plays of Brecht.
I am the director, and in this blog, I will be recording my ongoing thoughts about the evolution of the production. There will also be short reflections on various aspects of the specific problems of producing a Brecht play in a Chinese context.
I am working towards the completion of three discrete interpretations of the signature scene of Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The scenes are being staged in Hong Kong--my hometown--and reflect the rich soil of Chinese engagement within the plays of Brecht. This blog is a chronicle of my staging of scenes. In it will record my ongoing thoughts and the evolution of the production. As part of the process, I have been writing about Brecht’s centrality on the notion of alienation and intimacy- both in his lens and mine as an artist. This blog is a further deliberation upon the different approaches of intimacy.
